When I decided that it was time to start writing again, I looked for a free WordPress theme with Medium‘s style, but I couldn’t find one that met all of my needs, so I decided to create one from scratch. Well… Not really from scratch, but rather on top of the great starter theme _s.
That’s how Medium Rare was born, a simple and responsive WordPress theme inspired by Medium but with a soul of its own.
You can see the theme currently powering this blog, but of course it’s still a WIP, as you’ve probably guessed based on the title. I will keep improving it and trying to add new features whenever I have the time for it, since I’m really enjoying working on this project.
The current features of Medium Rare are:
- All of the features provided by _s.
- Theme settings for hiding comments links (in the posts list) and the footer (site-wide).
- Style inspired by Medium but oriented to single user blog and “About me” page.
- Comments section and form similar to Medium’s.
- Support for featured images, small in the posts list and as wide as the page while viewing a single post.
- One level of sub-menus on desktop and mobile.
Some of the planned features:
- Suggestions on each post, related to it (“You might also like” section).
- Lightbox-like image modal, possibly with a styled third party plugin.
- Portfolio integration matching the theme’s style, possibly with a custom or third party plugin.
- Sharing integration matching the theme’s style, possibly with a custom or third party plugin.
- Better 404 page.
- Improved search results.
- Text wrapping around post images.
- Header similar to Medium’s, hiding when scrolling down and showing when scrolling up.
- Support for one-column posts list and post thumbnails similar to the ones on Medium.
The theme is open-source, licensed under the GPL, and of course you’re more than welcome to help me make it better either by reporting issues/improvements or sending a pull request with your own code.
I hope that Medium Rare will be a really useful theme for more people than just myself 🙂
